What can I do if a photo developer ruins my negatives?

I'm a little burned about this. I recently took a roll of film to Walgreens to have it developed. Apparently they did not have the equipment to develop the specific film stock I used. Of course, instead of checking the label on the film roll, the lab tech just ran the roll anyway. The process totally washed the emulsion off my film and ruined the negative. When I went to pick it up, the guy at the counter just shrugged and gave me a "Sorry. Our bad." response. I filed a formal complaint with the Walgreens store, have yet to get a response. Should I file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau? Can I demand compensation for the price I paid for the original roll of film? At the very least, I will never take my film to Walgreens again, and would recommend the same to everyone who still takes pictures with a film camera.

This sort of falls on your shoulders.

Walgreen's, CV, Target and other in store processing machines only develop C-41 compatible film. If you hand in a roll of film and do not check the box that says it is E-6 film or worse hand them some black and white film and expect a clerk (usually they have NO clue about photography and can just barely run the processing machines) to do the right thing, that is not realistic.

Accept their apology and free roll of film, re-shoot and move on.

When I have film to process it goes to a pro lab near me. ALL the black and white I shoot, I process myself.

They should replace the roll of film (but they may not have the same kind, so you will probably get a roll of C41 color.) If they are feeling fluffy, they might give you a free processing with it. If you read the fine print on the envelope, they are not liable for any more than replacement of the roll, even if they screwed it up That's too bad, but own up to your mistake in dropping off a non C41 roll at the local minilab without mentioning it or asking.

BTW, some labs would have caught this before ruining a roll. *My* lab personnel would have noticed right away. Be choosy about your processor.
