You may have it backward. For many people acid reflux CAUSES post-nasal drip. Rather than trying to treat the post-nasal drip, focus on treating the acid reflux with acid reducing medication (proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec) and lifestyle and diet changes (avoiding reflux trigger fooRAB, not eating for 3 hours before bed, raising the head of your bed 4-6 inches, eating smaller portions, etc.).

It can take up to 3 months of medication and lifestyle before your symptoms subside completely, but most people notice some improvement after 2-4 weeks.

Hi Kurt,

Maybe see an allergist to get sinus medication for post nasal drip. I use prescription Nasonex nasal spray and it works well. Maybe try an antihistamine or decongestant to see if that helps. These used in conjunction with your PPI or H2 blocker could be the corabination that helps both.

Take Care

I have a problem with constant mucus in my throat that I constantly have to keep bringing up. Usually the mucus is clear and sticky like glue but sometimes the mucus has bits of food that I've eaten and small tonsil stones in it. I had surgery for a septal perforation by an ENT in 2008 and have noticed the problem since then. I was treated by an allergist and a pulmonologist all to no avail. Sometimes in the morning I blow my nose because there's mucus in there as well. I've taken every nasal spray, allergy medication and Prednisone but nothing works. I'm beginning to think that what I might have is silent acid reflux and maybe I should be treat that instead of the post nasal drip cause it seems the mucus is coming up from my throat or why else would there be bits of food in the mucus. This problem is driving me nuts as well.

Hi MaeBenedita,

I am so sorry to hear about your constant mucous problem. Have you been to another ENT after that surgery? You said it all started after that. I wonder if it was done incorrectly or insufficiently. But I would definitely want that treated since it may be the root cause of acid reflux.

Thanks,

I raised the head of the bed with bricks and it helped my sinus' tremendously while I addressed my Gerd

Thanks for replying to my post. Actually I haven't gone to another ENT but I have seen an allergist and a pulmonary specialist since then all to no avail. Everytime I take CAT SCANS of my sinuses everything appears normal. A poster on Craigslist told me to google "esophagal cancer" and I did and I have some of the symptoms but not all of them. It seems like once I turned 46 and caught the flu plus had the septal perforation surgery performed in 2008 the sh*t hit the fan for me. I also have uterine fibroiRAB really bad and am chronically anemic and some of my fellow fibroid sufferers tell me that acid reflux is one of the many problems associated with fibroiRAB. I tell you if it ain't ants it's worms.
