What can i do about my alltel contract?

Since christmas is getting closer, i've really been wanting a new phone.

I can't really get one right now because i just started a new contract back in April.

So i was just wondering;
my mom has a phone that's due for a new contract.
if we get her a new phone, could i just switch hers with mine?

So she gets my old one, since she doesn't really want a new one?
