what can happen if I put too much oil in my ford fiesta?

I've just bought an N reg petrol engine 1.1 fiesta and the oil was pretty much empty. I put about 3 litres in and it turns out that was about a litre too much for the car (I am used to a bigger engine that holds a lot more I guess)

If I drive the car, am I going to damage the engine? I have it booked in to a mechanic on Tuesday in any case, but I have places I have to be before then so I'm wondering whether to risk it or not.
