What camera is the best for shooting high paced sports? Mainly Hockey.?

Not looking for a professional camera that costs thousands, but hopefully a good SOLID camera capable of shooting large in depth pics. Thanks.
I just looked at the Nikon D40. Will that take really good high paced sports shots? It seems to be much more inexpensive than the Canon series of cameras that are 4,000.
