What breed of dog would best suit the lifestyle of a working college student?

I'm going to be a junior at UCSD next year, and I'm looking to get a dog! I'll be living in an apartment and I am a full time student with a part time waitressing job. There will be long periods of time when I will be out of the house, and so I want a dog that won't suffer from separation anxiety. Of course I'm willing to spend lots of quality time with him every night after work/school, as well as any time I'm home between classes, but I do need a dog that will be okay on its own for 5 or 6 hours at a time. (I will have another person living in the apartment with me who can spend time with the dog if she's home while I'm not.) I'd like a small dog, no more than 15 lbs. I'm willing to play with him indoors every day so he can exercise, but I don't think I'll have the time to walk him every day. I just want a loving dog that will keep me company when I'm at home studying or watching TV. I have a few questions:

Should I opt for a puppy or an adult dog?
What breed(s) would best suit my lifestyle?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Expect a lot of negative feedback from how busy you are but I really dont know too many inactive small breeds;maybe a cat would be best for you

Get an adult Japanese Chin. They are soo cute and have the right temperment. But if u so want a puppy I suggest getting a kennel and a play pen with pee pads and toys to put the dog in while ur away. And have your radio on during the day wile your away.

Definitely an adult dog, a puppy will require too much energy (exercise, training, housebreaking, etc.) Personally, I think a Japanese Chin would work for you. Google "Japanese Chin Rescue" to find your next best friend!

get and adult dog if you are away from a puppy too long they can develop seperation anxiety and develop strange behaviors I made the same mistake and now my boston terrier is too securely attached to my grandma to the point where she bites anybody who gets near her...also my yorkie poo cries like hes being tortured whenever somebody comes home because he thinks they will never come back :/
