What breed of dog would best suit the lifestyle of a working college student?

I'm going to be a junior at UCSD next year, and I'm looking to get a dog! I'll be living in an apartment and I am a full time student with a part time waitressing job. There will be long periods of time when I will be out of the house, and so I want a dog that won't suffer from separation anxiety. Of course I'm willing to spend lots of quality time with him every night after work/school, as well as any time I'm home between classes, but I do need a dog that will be okay on its own for 5 or 6 hours at a time. (I will have another person living in the apartment with me who can spend time with the dog if she's home while I'm not.) I'd like a small dog, no more than 15 lbs. I'm willing to play with him indoors every day so he can exercise, but I don't think I'll have the time to walk him every day. I just want a loving dog that will keep me company when I'm at home studying or watching TV. I have a few questions:

Should I opt for a puppy or an adult dog?
What breed(s) would best suit my lifestyle?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
