My sister has never liked to read. Then she discovered Cynthia Kadohata's books. She's already read Kira-Kira, Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam, and is now reading Weedflower.
I've recommended other books to her about Asian characters, particularly those that move to America during the story. She loves them and says she would like to read more books like that. (They don't have to actually have characters that move to America -- she does like the cultures and how they're different from western ones, but she'll read ones where the characters may not even have ever heard of America, or before it's even colonized.)
Any suggestions? I'm really glad she's actually started to like reading.
Oh, and she's 12-years-old, 6th grade.
