here is what I want, and please skimp on the whole "you should take classes and not be self taught" lecture, that's not what i asked.

I know hiragana, and katakana, and very random things in Japanese because I have listened to it for so long... years, and I'm good at pronouncing it, but have never had any formal learning even from books.

a book that will help me

•know full basics about writing.
•teaches hiragana, katakana, and kanji
•is written in something like english, romaji, and japanese
•teaches vocab
•basics of speaking
•doesn't teach obsolete ways of speaking, or overly polite ways of speaking that is almost useless anyway because no one speaks like that in real life.

I'm very afraid that i will learn overly formal Japanese, that no one really speaks, that is a complaint i hear about a lot, but I'm afraid of trying to dodge it as I'm not fluent in the first place and couldn't tell the difference.

something not too easy, but still beginner level.

very informative please, but very instructive and helpful.
