What bicycle should I buy?

I am an active, fit, adult rural male who exercises regularly. Right now I'm looking for something else to do, and have thought about getting a bicycle. I'd want one rugged enough to ride on the gravel logging roads behind my house, but also decent enough to take somewhere on an actual bike path. I'm not into any sort of rugged biking, but just want something I can pedal around and enjoy the outdoors, and not have to work too hard going uphill on.

Since this is something "new" to try, I'm also more interested in a "starter" type bike that I'll maybe use a couple weekends a month, and not some sort of super-expensive ultra-line model.

And ideas or suggestions on style, manufacturer, vendor, cost, etc.?
