You're not allowed to do lifts in competition. At least not in Australia.
You CAN do lifts in whatever dance you'd like to. I like them in Sambas, personally.
Having said that, I've never done a lift. If you can't do it in competition, I don't see the point. There are plenty of fun moves you can do that ARE allowed in competition though.
