What baits and methods do you reccomend for tench fishing ?

i fish on a canal where their are many tench its just that i havent caught one yet. I have always tended to fish next to a weedbed on ther bottom on a single grain of sweetcorn which has so far not worked. I usually float fish but am open to any new methods which may help me catch a tench.
 
you can use alot of different types of baits just make sure they are light near baits
