What backpack should I choose?

I am new to backpacking. My friends and I are looking forward to 3 season backpacking. We will probably just be weekend guys, but we might eventually go on longer trips. We are not in a position to spend a fortune though. I started out looking at the REI Galaxy and the High Peak Tibet 755.

What do you recommend for nice pack. I would like to have something comfortable that top loads (must have side pockets to access stuff in the middle or bottom without having to pull it all out).

Also, I would appreciate any advise on Mummy bags, 1 to 3 man tents, and anything else we will need.

I live near a REI, Bass Pro, Cabela, and Gander Mountain. I do not mind ordering something on line either.

Thanks in advance,

Josh

Two of the most important things when you are out in the back country are your boots and your pack. If you don't have comfortable boots or pack you will not have the best of times. I really believe that the Arc'Teryx Bora 80 is the best pack out there. It is more expensive though. Since you have an REI close by you might want to wait for their big sale they have every year. I got my Bora 80 for over 50% off. I would also look into the REI packs as well because what they do is they have their packs made by other pack companies and label them REI. Last I knew Arc'Teryx was making all of the REI packs.

A tip for when you are looking at a pack. REI will have weighted bags that you can fill a pack with. Fill the pack to a weight that you think you might normally have it filled to and then wear it around for a couple minutes. You will get a better idea about how the pack fits you. Second tip, a pack that fits you well should have no space between the shoulder straps and your back/shoulders.

Good luck with your pack search

If you are going to be a three season packer I would look for a bag that is rated down to about 15 degrees.
