What attracts birds and other wildlife to my garden?

I love birdwatching and there are so many different varities in my garden that I felt that I had to ask this question. I keep my gardens in the best condition I can for someone my age and my wife called me over to the window earlier and I saw Robins, Blackbirds, Starlings, Sparrows and there was even a little fox out too. What is it that attacts all this wildlife to my garden?
 
I too love wild life & provide food & water throughout the year & have some birds come to the hand
However there can be a downside. I love roses in my garden but unfortunately so do the deer
They have reached the stage where they just ignore me when I am in the garden
