I was in the Army for 4 years and was diagnosed with asthma at my first duty station. However, I wasn't discharged...the doctors just treated me like crap. They never explained to me what was going on...why I was coughing, short of breath, sick all the time, etc...they just kept asking me how I ever got into the Army in the first place and accused me of lying on my physical. I'd go to sick call for bronchitis and they'd tell me I had asthma and the accusations would start again. They never told me what asthma was. They gave me an endless supply of albuterol, but never told me what it was or why I'd want to use it in the first place! I just dealt with things on my own and didn't go to sick call unless I really needed to...pneumonia, sinus infection, broken bone, etc. Honestly, he's really lucky he got discharged because asthma is one of those things he definitely doesn't want if he's in the Army.
I'm soooo thankful for my current doctor and good asthma treatment!
I'm sorry for the rant, but I had to let it out
There are certain benefits he'll receive by virtue of having been medically discharged...such as PX/Commissary benefits for a certain period of time, medical treatment for the condition for which he was discharged, etc. Also, he'll receive monthly monetary compensation for his disabilty that was "caused" by his military service. The amount of monthly compensation will be determined by a corabination of his rank, time-in-service and the degree of impairment caused by his disability. The military will use a percentage to describe his degree of impairment. I'm not sure what it is for asthma, but I'm assuming it varies according to the severity of asthma: mild intermittent, mild persistent, moderate persistent or severe persistent. The more severe his asthma classification the higher his monthly compensation will be. This percentage will be multiplied by a monthly income that is determined by his rank and time-in-service...this will determine his monthly disability income. He will receive his disability pay each month, every year, forever and ever.
Before he gets his award, I'm sure they'll check to make sure his asthma wasn't pre-existing. As in, he didn't have childhood asthma that remitted or had asthma and didn't apply for a medical waiver prior to enlisting. I have no idea how in depth they look.
You can look at the VA website to find out more information, as they are the ones who deal with disability stuff. They are the ones who process disability claims and determine the percentage of disability. If you have a question you can call them or email them.
I hope this helps answer your questions. If you have more questions, please feel free to post again. I promise, I won't rant
Good luck!
