..."Idol" judge? Let me say that I love Ellen. She's an amazing person; sweet, funny and compassionate.

That being said, I love American Idol and I love Paula. No matter what her crtics say, I feel that she brought a kind of nurturing, and motherly aspect to the show. Contestants could always count on her to give them a kind word and encurage them.

She was funny too. . . .even though the laughs she generated were often at her expense.

I was absolutely shocked when she announced that she was leaving the show.

I want to reserve my judgement of her ummm "judging" for after I've seen her in action, but I would really like to know what others were thinking about it.
Oops! I didn't realise that I'd posted this question in "Soap Operas". My mistake! Oh well.

I like Paula too, but she chose to leave.
I think Ellen will do great. She said she's just representing the public when she votes. She has no musical background. She'll be just a famous ordinary person as judge. Good move on American Idol's part.

I think Idol made a smart choice.. Ellen will be just like the viewers at home, most of us don't have a musical b/g but we do know what we like and don't like.. And most of all I can't wait to see how she interacts with Simon.. should be interesting.. lol

I love Ellen but how is she possibly qualified to judge musical talent?

Paula was perfect as a judge because she's been a singing and a choreographer. Ellen has been a talk show host and a stand up comedian.

I just don't understand why American Idol couldn't have found a musically inclined celebrity.

I think adding Ellen would be giving American Idol a twist, and a good one, too.

The reason being is that she has never been in the musical field BUT she's just like the outside world looking in- she will be judging on whether she's interested in how the person is singing and performing. Her views would be the same as those watching from their home.

Also, she does SO many interviews with different singers that she could see the contestants personality and decide "S/he has what it takes, great personality" or "S/he sings good but they have the wrong attitude". I don't think she'd judge so much on how the singers are dressing either, which is something the other judges lean on. She's like us: she just wants to hear beautiful music coming from a beautiful voice.

I think this is going to be a great change for Idol, although, I wish Paula was still up there. ( =

I think they chose Ellen to keep the rating high. Don't get me wrong, I like Ellen, but, I wish the show would have hired a person with a background in music. All in all she will bring a fun, caring, and a spunky attitude to the show. And I will still watch the show and vote for who I think is the best singer not what the judges think.

My 1st thought was like many others, she doesn't have the background in music that would be valuable when judging a singer.

Then I got to thinking that the judges only judge who goes to Hollywood. Once the performances start, the voters are the ones who truly decide who goes and who stays.

If, technically, I have no background in music, and I can judge, why not Ellen? She's funny and I hope she has fun at the expense of Simon.

I think she will be great for the show, she is funny and loves music
so be in for some suprises, the other judges are too serious

I myself was shocked when Ellen is going to be doing the show. But after it sank in i think she will be a good aset to the show. Hope she can give some come back remarks to Simon.
