...environment? i.e. the usa? but like if you live in Nevada only buying food from Nevada, i cannot think of two reasons, only the transportation of food what else i there?

lower costs of transportation, increased benefit to the growers (cutting out warehousing, transport, intermodal switches and the labor costs involved (i.e, truck to ship, ship to truck, truck to warehouse, warehouse to retail, retail to consumer). In other words, the grower keeps more of the money from the sale, and the consumer pays less. This represents increased efficiency.
