What are those tanks in car sound systems?

I've seen in some car sound systems that they have these metal tanks with tubes coming out of them and they look kind of like a fire extinguisher. What are these and what do they do?
 
Capacitors. They basically stabilize the power going to the amplifier and make it easier on your battery. They aren't really necessary on systems below 1500W, or any system that doesn't require a higher output alternator.
