My great aunt (who does not speak english) got 1 months worth of SSI money taken away from her last year because the social worker stated that she was able to travel. My great aunt tried to explain to the social worker that the vacation was a gift purchased by her son and that she really does not have any income or extra money. My great aunt does not speak english so I think there may have been miscommunication between her and the social worker. My great aunt had the option of going to a hearing to fight to get her money back but because her children were busy no one could help her.
This year, I will be going with my great aunt to see her social worker. My great aunt will be taking a vacation again soon (a gift from her son). Can somebody please tell me what the vacation rules and regulations are for elderly people recieving SSI? I want to make sure I communicate the correct information to the social worker so my great aunt does not get money deducted from her SSI check again. She's old and her SSI checks barely help her cover her bills... so I don't want to see the poor lady lose money again for no good reason. Thank you.
