Slavery - the country could not exist 1/2 slave and 1/2 free. There was a constant and continual friction between the two every time a new state entered the union to see which it would be and which side would thereby have the advantage in the balance of power.
State Rights vs. Strong Federal Govt - Southern States felt The US was a union of sovereign states (somewhat like the European Union today) with ultimate powers residing with each individual States. Northern States felt we were one country needing a strong central government residing in Washington with ultimate decision mnaking power (like today)
These frictions leds to ever escalating conflict (take your pick of one) from the "bleeding of Kansas" to John Brown's attempted slave revolt and ultimately the Civil war.
Lincoln's election finally convinced the South that they had to secede because he promise that no more slave States would be entered into the Union and they felt this meant they would slowly be outnumbered and lose power and rights.
The Civil War made America what it is today, a free country with a strong centralized government.
