What are the tests for GMAT like?

I have to do a GMAT in order to apply for a master's course (not MBA). I also have no work experience and have done a BSc and a PG Dip. As it's more of an American style test with similar level of reasoning, what is the test like?
How long should someone revise (using past papers) for the test?
Is 1 month reasonable enough time to get the test done and the results back (provided you do your best)?
How hard is the test in your opinion (I have seem sample answers to past questions, but since I haven't done the test, I wouldn't have the actual feel for it)
Any words of wisdom?

Having only been tested in the UK and understanding America's higher and degree level systems are drastically different from the UK's, how should I reaslistically compare both systems and what should really relate to what? e.g. a 1st Class is really the highest grade you can get in the UK for an undergraduate degree but this is only 70%. What is the US's equivalent?

I prefer answers from people who has studied in both countries or have some sort recognition of the higher education systems in both. However, I would also welcome answers from people who has done the test or study in the US.
