Hello,
I am a college student, and for the past year I've been in the process of penning a novel. I expect to complete the composition of the rough draft in less than a month, and then begin the process of revision (which could take some time, given the length of the piece). I have every confidence that my writing is good enough to be published by a publishing house (I have no interest in self publishing), but as I draw near to the completion of my manuscript, I realize that I know next to nothing about what goes into the publication of a novel!
Any information on the process of selling a manuscript to a publishing firm would be appreciated.
What are the first steps that I should take towards the publication of my project?
A little about my work:
-Though I do not like to do so, I would categorize the literary stylings, and the nature of the narrative of my novel as being a post-modern brand of literary fiction.
-I am not aspiring to be a "professional novelist" of any sort, and I am not an English major.
-I expect the final word count to be between 320,000 and 350,000.
