i know muslims who have dogs, but all of them are outdoor dogs. I know it is haraam to keep an indoor dog for any reason, even for guarding the home, since dogs are unclean and angels don't bless people with indoor dogs.
i want a great dane to guard my house, since no one wants to mess with a dog the size of a pony, and where i live, braking into houses is not uncommon.
but if you keep an outdoor dog, does it have to be a guard dog? or can she be an outdoor companion that i play fetch with? plus, i need to exercise more. if i take my outdoor dogs for a walk, to meet my exercise needs and my dog's exercise, but never let him inside my house, is that haraam?
of course, the main reaon why i want a great dane is to intimidate people who try to break in my house, but they need exercise, and so do i.
but are outdoor canine companions haraam? or can i keep one as long as she never enters my house?
i've met muslims with outdoor dogs, but i doubt that they're companions.
