What are the "red lights" that flash at you when screened in the back of Ben Gurion...

...Airport in Israel? I recently took a flight from Ben Gurion (Tel Aviv) Airport in Israel. I was screened quite intensely for over two hours where my possessions where independently and repeatedly scanned, swabbed, x-rayed, etc. I felt really violated. Then I was forced to go to a private screening area behind the airline counters. I was asked to remove my shoes, belt watch (like back in the old days of regular travel). I walked through the metal detector then back. The screener told me to wait, he left the tiny room and a few seconds later I was blasted by a vertical row of red lights on the side of the metal detector. I thought this was strange. After security screening, my friend who I was traveling with but departing on a different flight, told me of a worse story where she had also been interrogated simultaneously as I was myself. I happened to mention the blast of red lights and she said that the exact same thing happened to her. So my question is, did we receive some sort of body scan or x-rays that we were not aware of? What was the purpose of the flashing lights? Both "exposures" happened immediately after the security person left the small room and closed a heavy curtain. Please help.
