At the Bottom of the heap would be the levy or conscript. these are the spear carriers that make up a lords regiment. Basically farmers and villagers drafted to go off and crusade for their liege lord. Next would be squires. The trainee knights. There time would be spent making sure that the knights were well tended to. Then would come the knights. these were the guys with the armor and horses and all the weapons and most importantly, the training. They were the heavies. Last would be the field marshalls. They would be the senior knights in control of a group of knights each. They would be under control of a Duke or a prince.
A lot of regiments would be bolstered by mercenaries. Crossbowmen from Italy. Archers from Wales. Swiss pikemen. and any freelance knight out of work and looking for a job.
Actual named ranks, private, corporal etc didnt come in until later.

I'm writing an oneshot for fanfiction that involves Link training a troop for war and I'm a bit confused on what that would make him. Would he be a leuntent or a general? Or would he be something else? Shad is his adviser-if that is the correct term-and that's about it. I just need a list of what the correct names are and their descriptions in a list, that's all. Thanks to anyone for helping me out and I'll be sure to thank you in the a/n. ^_^
