What are the pro's and con's of marriage in a financial and leagal sense?

[just me :)]

Thought about just having the ceremony for spiritual purposes and skipping the marriage licence part. We plan on having children and being an average married couple just with out the leagal matters. We make around 40k each.
We live in a state where common law marriage is not recognized.
