What are the negative effects that mass media has on society?

I am doing a persuasive speech for an english assignment and the topic is that mass media has a negative effect on society. What are some good ideas for this topic? so far i have, that the media only tell us what they want us to know, therefore we make assumptions on situations without all the facts. also information on the internet can be changed and can spread extremely fast. as a result of this Society is mislead about events or peoples careers and lives (usually celebrities) can be destroyed. Please help me!!

your could add the effect it takes on people's self esteem by magazines, commercials, television and etc, where the media shows perfect images of how people should be. Leading some young viewers men and woman into health problems, mental problems and etc.

also, it also distracts the moral of where our country stands and in what we spend it on. Millions of dollars go into promotion and stuff. Small business don't have this advantage therefore it affects them.
