What are the mechanics of accents?

This may be a stupid question, but it's been in the back of my mind for awhile.

What actually creates accents?
Is it the specific group of people? Is it their native tongue that influences it? Is it the geography of their homeland?

I just don't know.
 
talking fast doesn't conserve that much more energy than talking slow.

I'm from the south [NC]. though from an urban part. I don't really have much of accent. I don't say yall. I say Data like Day-da not Dah-da..
But yes southern accent is slower, if I go 20 minutes in either direction, I start seeing grass and fields instead of asphalt and concrete and the accent is quite different.
 
I would imagine it would have quite alot to do with geography, if you mean where accents orginated.

Sort of like (I'm from TN) to me people mid western states sound like they are talking entirely too fast, and almost sound rude to me...I accredit it to the cold. Using more energy to stay warmer..

And of course we in the South speak much slower (don't make fun lol), I would say because the temperature is warmer and speaking slower conserves more energy (the less you move)
