What are the graduation requirements for pre-med?

I'm planning on going to college in hopes of becoming a forensic pathologist. I'm a senior in high school this year, so I'm searching for schools that offer a pre-medicine program.

It was my understanding that pre-med is a path of study; it's general or "extra curricular" classes that you take while studying a major. This being said, I set out to choose a major--keeping in mind that, apparently, med schools like "unique" majors--and settled on American Sign Language or psychology.

But when I went to visit a college last week and I was talking to the admissions counselor there, she encouraged me to major not in ASL but in MATH of all things (sorry, but I'm not a big fan of mathematics) if I really wanted to do pre-med. In fact, she told me I can't do pre-med if I'm majoring in American Sign Language.

So what's up with this? What are the requirements of the pre-med program (or the usual kinds of classes that would be considered a pre-med path of study?)? Is there any hope for me here, or am I going to need to change my major?
