What are the differences between .net / ASP.net / PHP?

I have created the design of my social networking website in PHP but wanted to take it to the next level with complete functionality. I recently got an offer for somebody to do my site but since users will be submitting info and having it automatically updated to the site, he suggested doing it only in .net .. is this the same as ASP.net? if so why would it be a good idea to be built this way.. i dont want to ask him and sound like a total idiot, is there a simple answer for this?
