I know that in FL one of the laws is that they have to give written notification.
I ask because I have a school debt that is now supposedly over $800 (this is from the school itself, not sallie mae). The thing is that the first time they contacted me was through phone telling me to send payment to an address that wasn't the school. The collection agency they sent me to seemed legit, but after numerous requests, there was still NEVER any written or visible proof of what this amount of money that I owed was for (no notification, bill, or anything). I'm not trying to dodge something if I need to pay it, but I don't want to be jipped from my money with any scam either. Thanks for any opinions! (Real answers with sources please, nothing that is unsubstantial like I see in some other answers.)
