I am scheduled for surgery on February 25th for a Hemi-laminectomy on my L5-S1 disc. The doc said the overall goal was to reduce leg pain and decompress the nerve root. I guess the Hemi-laminectomy involves cutting a slot in the left side of the lamina, going in and removing the bulging/ruptured material and closing back up. I won't hold anyone to an answer, just kind of looking for experiences from other people with this similiar condition. What are the odRAB that this surgery will reduce my actual back pain since that is where most of my pain has been? My leg pain comes and goes, but mostly it is a cramping feeling down the back of my leg with a feeling of instability in my low back. Anyone with an opinion?

As your surgeon indicated, success rates are higher if the majority of a patient's pain is sciatic-type pain in the leg. Published success rates when the pain is primarily coming from the lower back area is that 70-80% of patients will have "significant" improvement of pain.

Is your surgery being done for stenosis?
