Myself and 3 friends are heading to Peru this winter and are trying to gather as much info as possible, anything helps (but specific companies would be great). If you've done the trail and had a good, or bad, experience I would love to hear about it. Thanks

Honestly, you're better off doing a trek in Huaraz or somewhere else in Peru. You'll get the great experience from the trek, and you'll be able to experience Machu Picchu as it should be experienced. I did not personally take an Incan trail, but while backpacking in Peru I've met quite a few people who have. Most of them have basically said the same thing: It was very nice, but they wished that they had more energy when they arrived at Machu Picchu (and were cleaner for pictures). Also, many of them did not arrive early in the day, so they really only got a half day and did not get a chance to climb up Wayna Picchu (which only 400 people can climb up a day.) I climbed Wayna Picchu and it was definitely worth the hike (although a very hard one at that.)

So, in short, my suggestion, save some money buy taking a less "traveled" trail, get a different experience, and have plenty of energy and time to explore Machu Picchu.

*PS if not doing the Inca Trail, you stay over night in Aguas Caliente and take a short bus up to Machu Picchu*
