What are the best camara settings for fill flash for an outdoors wedding?

I just tried using my direct diffuser for fill flash for an upcomming outdoors wedding, however the photos are coming out out too bright. How should I use direct flash then?

I have a cannon 40D with a 430EX speedlight.
any help will be appreciated !
