one rope snaps? A project requires we hang a 3.0 kg periodic table that's been lying around the office for months. Finding some more massless rope, we hang the periodic table from two ropes; the angle between the ropes is 140º and the angle between the rope and the hanging object is 53º

a) What are the tensions in the two ropes?

b) If the left hand rope were to suddenly snap, what would be the magnitude and direction of the acceleration at that instant?
