What are "Sport loads." for a 12 gauge shotgun commonly used for?

Can they be used as bird shots? What about home defense? What can I use them for?
 
Sport loads is what (when I was on the local trap team and shot competitively) the folks who shot 12 ga's used.

I'm sure you could use it for birds, I've done it (with a 12 and 20 ga).. and anything is better than nothing in regards to home defense. Remember, it is not ideal for home defense.
