What are some ways to naturally boost recovery time after heavy lifting?

I used to use andros but they banned them. I'm getting back into lifting for the first time in about 8 years and at this pace I'm going to be 'getting in shape' for 6 months or more before I can actually do some serious lifting without being crippled for days. At my age I'm afraid I might never be able to do it naturally anyway. I used to be able to curl 55lbs in each arm and bench 290lbs. Now I can barely do 25 in each arm and 160lbs because my joints crack and my muscles pull. What can I do?
I still cant believe they banned prohormones in the first place. What's the point of hitting the gym in the first place if the natural result is that you're weak as a kitten for several days after.
