I am teaching an autistic teen to read. What are some techniques to figure out an unfamiliar word in a passage? So far, I have come up with these:
*Sounding it out
*Look for clues in pictures (if any)
*Guessing at what word it might be (what other words it looks like) and see if it fits
*Breaking compound words into smaller parts
*Look at the root word and find out what it means
*Using the rest of the passage to guess what the meaning might be
*Substitute a word with a similar meaning
