What are some suburban colleges/universities with good academics and financial aid?

Helpful teachers, friendly down to earth students, solid financial aid, and a great education in a suburban city in the mid-west/east coast...hopefully a small/medium sized school. what colleges have all this?

No religious preference and preferably no schools under 1,000-1,500 students.
Only problem with liberal arts schools is they seem to be, oftentimes, in the middle of nowhere.
