What are some ideas for an ordeal in a fantasy story?

Basically, my story has kids going to a boarding school (sort of) and they have to do three tests to judge their mettle. It's effectively a school for slayers of magical stuff. I've got some ideas already, but I wanted to know if anyone had any cool suggestions? (It's 3:57 and my mind isn't at 100% lol)

(The tests all need to fit into one day, as the students still have to eat and settle into their new homes)

What if while they are asleep they are transported to a dream world where things dont make sense or are very different from their known reality and they have to deduce a way to escape, and if they dont they'll oversleep their other tests.
