What are some good tips for writing music?

I would like to get into writing some songs, I am a guitarist and I want to know some strategies for writing lyrics, I don't like to get too in depth with emotion, which is what usually happens and I end up with lyrics that end up grunge style or something like that. I was thinking of creating some folky or alternative acoustic tunes (but not as alternative as modern music like nickleback or something) I want the tunes to have the roots of classic rock or bob dylan.
 
Hello there, as a songwriter I know from experience that there are many ways to write a song. First off if you don't want to put a whole lot of emotion into your songs than you could just write instrumental music to stay away from lyrics. But if you really want to write lyrics you could write a song that tells a story, any story you want with any ending. I personally love songs like that. But I know emotions end up coming out in anything you write or play. So I hope this has helped!
