What are some good techniques for dealing with pain?

I'm going to go running, and I'm in such bad shape now that when I do a distance that used to be good for warm-ups, I feel like I'm running marathon. So here's the question. What are some techniques I can use to deal with that fatigued, painful, all-my-muscles-are-going-to-give-up feeling? I really want to learn how to listen to my body, but at the same time get through the uncomfortable moment, and keep pushing myself. Do you know any breathing methods? Mental techniques? You can even just tell me what you're thinking when you enter that last quarter of the race. Whatever works for you. Thanks!
