There is not a lot of difference among brands at the same price point. The business is very competitive. When shopping for a bike, I always start with Giant as a basis for comparison.

Assuming you want a new bike, your best bet is to go to local bike shops and ask if they have any of last year's models left over. That can make your money go considerably further.

You can also go to bike shops and ask if they have taken anything in trade that is your size. There is nothing wrong with a used bike that has been checked over by a qualified technician.

Your budget is good enough to get you into a good quality entry level bike from your local shop. You'll get good service and assistance with your fit there, too. The last two are items carried by bikesdirect, and new cyclists or those not versed in bike fit and light mechanical tasks may not find the online route the best route.
 
i'm not sure if you're trying to find something used or not. but i would say trek or and older bridgestone.
