what are some good debate reasons to hospitalize people who are suicidal?

i'm doing a debate on weather suicidal people should be hospitalized and my side is for it. i need some good points i can say and data, case study and other kinds of solid concrete evidence to support my point which is: people who are suicidal should be hospitalized. thank you

Well, 1) they stay alive. That seems like a positive. 2) They get treatment for whatever mental or emotional condition put them at the point of suicide. 3) They get medication to reduce depression and/or anxiety. 4) They learn new coping mechanisms in life through therapy 5) They get therapy. 6) They find out they are not alone since there are others in the hospital for the same room. 7) The stress of providing mundane things for themselves, like food and clothing is relieved..and somebody who is suicidal is usually not interested in caring for his mundane, day to day needs.

Here's the downside (so maybe you can think up responses for when you hear these things:
1) Hospitalization totally disrupts their lives. 2) Hospitalization totally disrupts their income 3) Hospitalization probably totally uses up all their insurance. 4) Hospitalization will ruin them financially so that if they already were under enough stress to commit suicide, life just got 1000 times harder. 5) Often they do not get appropriate treatment in the hospital. 6) Often they do not get appropriate medication in the hospital. 7) Often they do not get appropriate therapy in the hospital 8) Even though this is the 21st century, there is still social stigma related to a hospitalization for a mental or emotional problem. 9) Some areas have crisis intervention in-patient facilities to try to stabilize patients without going into the hospital for all the downside reasons just listed. It usually ends up doing a lot more harm than good. You got the wrong side to argue. Sorry.

Good luck.

I was on the debate team in school and the adrenalin flows when you have conviction in what you say..if you quote others ideas you will sound flat..you gotta to work it and only you can do that!!

So they're not a danger to themselves.
So maybe they can rehabilitate.
So they can think about what they are going to do and maybe decide not to.

Here's some information from a website:

"It is estimated that around 1 million people commit suicide every year worldwide. In a typical year, this is larger than the number of people who die through murder and war.

The most common method of committing suicide involves ingesting pesticides. Many suicides are committed by farmers in less-developed nations and they often use pesticides which were intended for use on their crops. Over one quarter of all suicides in the world are committed in this way.

Globally, around 16 in every 100,000 people commit suicide each year. By nation, the highest suicide rates are found in countries in the Baltic region. It is generally thought that, for every successful suicide attempt, somewhere between 10 and 50 unsuccessful attempts are made and one Australian study found that as much as 3% of the population contemplates suicide each week. In total, suicide accounts for 2% of all reported deaths though its incidence is believed to be under-reported. "

You could use that and say that if you hospitalized people who are suicidal you might reduce the number to 8 in every 100,000 or something similar.
