What are some good cake recipes for topsy turvy cakes, or sculptured cakes?

Would like to use sturday cakes for topsy turvy, whimsicle cakes, but I don't know if they would be too heavy? Would regular cake mix out of the boxes work good for these kind of cakes as well?
