A while back I had a Rocky Mountain Rockhopper Specialized. It was the most amazing bike I had ever had. Every pedal exerted ten times the force I put into it. It was light and smooth with excellent gears and brakes and a wonderful turning radius.
Then some junkies cut my 1-inch thick lock with 4 ft bolt cutters and a week later I saw it on the front page of my local paper, trashed and stripped in a park. I still have the steel end of the cut lock, just in the fantasy that I find the guy who stole my bike, so I can pulverize his worthless face while he pitifully wails and begs.
Anyway, every bike I've had since then has been like a cheap hooker. Pitiful machines that takes all my energy of each pedal and discards it for a repulsively low level of propulsion. Ugly, hard wheels, horrible turning system, bad brakes and a seat that feels like someone is repeatedly punching me in the anus throughout the entire journey.
I want a new bike, but I don't know enough about them to know which are good and which are not. It will be for mainly street use, but I don't want a thin-tired speedster. Something like a street-souped mountain bike, or similar.
What are the brands/models I should be looking for? I will be scouting local bike auctions for good bikes in good shape, and need to know what to look for.
Thank you.
