what are some exercises that develop strength?

i was recently surprised that i'm weak despite the fact that i exercise. as a matter of fact i have a good form of muscle. i'm not thin or underweight, i weigh just right for my height.

yesterday, i was asked to carry a 50kg (i sack) of sand, i was able to carry it but with too much exhaustion while the other guy who is thinner but taller than me carried it effortlessly. we have the same method of carrying: on our shoulders.

so why is that? what are some exercises that develop strength
