For a university class, I have to select and critique a research monograph in my field of study, which is linguistics. Could anyone name some famous research monographs that have had a significant impact upon linguistics? I'm guessing that the task lends itself better to an _empirical_ research monograph, which is why I didn't go with something like Chomsky's "Syntactic Structures". I'm looking for something like Labov's "The Social Stratification of English in New York City" (unfortunately already taken).
