What are good things to talk about in the staff room?

Hi all,

Tomorrow I am starting a new job as a teaching assistant. I am just out of high school and many of my colleagues are in there late 30's 40s and even 50s and so they are at different points in their lives.I am a little shy and I was wondering what would be good things to talk about - I really hate awkward silences or useless chatter.

talk about education. and you don't have to start a conversation. if they start a conversation go with the flow and talk with them about the conversation they are having.
