chemical fertilisers.

an example is ammonia. they contain nitrogen, which encourages some crops and certain plants to grow. e.g grass.

farmers put it on the the fields before they plant crops, and when the crops are growing.

too much fertiliser can cause eutrophication in rivers. the effect of which is described in the link below, but ultimately causes the death of fish.
